A bad bite affects more than just the appearance of your smile. Learn how bite irregularities can impact chewing, oral hygiene, and tooth wear.

Poor Bite Alignment: How Can It Affect Your Dental Health?

A bad bite, also known as dental malocclusion, is not merely an aesthetic issue.

The way the upper and lower teeth fit together can influence chewing, oral hygiene, tooth wear, and overall mouth function.

Therefore, identifying a bite abnormality early on can help prevent future complications.

What Is a Poor Bite?

A malocclusion occurs when the upper and lower teeth do not fit together properly when you close your mouth.

Some of the most common types of malocclusion include:

* Open bite.
* Crossbite.
* Deep bite.
* Upper front teeth that protrude excessively.
* Dental crowding.
* Differences in the relationship between the upper and lower jaws.

Not every malocclusion requires the same treatment. Some only need monitoring, while others may benefit from orthodontic treatment or other dental procedures.

1. It Can Make Chewing More Difficult

Our teeth are designed to work together to cut and grind food.

When certain teeth do not make proper contact, some areas may have to work harder than others.

For example, with an anterior open bite, the upper and lower front teeth do not meet properly. This can make it difficult to bite into certain foods.

2. It Can Cause Uneven Tooth Wear

A misaligned bite may cause some teeth to receive greater forces than others.

Over time, this may contribute to:

  • Enamel wear.

  • Tooth sensitivity.

  • Small fractures.

  • Uneven tooth wear.

  • Damage or deterioration of existing dental restorations.

It is important to remember that malocclusion is not the only cause of tooth wear. Other factors, such as teeth grinding, diet, and certain habits, can also contribute.

3. Dental Crowding Can Make Oral Hygiene More Difficult

When teeth are rotated, overlapping, or out of position, some surfaces can be more difficult to clean.

This may encourage plaque buildup if brushing and flossing do not effectively reach all areas.

For this reason, patients with crowded teeth should pay special attention to brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups.

4. Some Teeth May Be More Vulnerable to Injury

When the upper front teeth protrude too far forward, they may be more exposed to injuries.
This is particularly important for children and teenagers who participate in sports or other physical activities.

5. Some Bite Problems May Affect Speech

The tongue, lips, and teeth work together to produce certain sounds.

The tongue, lips, and teeth work together to produce certain sounds.

However, this does not mean that every speech problem is caused by poor bite alignment.

In certain cases, a coordinated evaluation with other healthcare professionals may be necessary.

Does a Poor Bite Always Cause Jaw Pain?

No.

We should not assume that all jaw pain or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain is caused by bite alignment.
Jaw pain can have several causes and requires an individual assessment.
That is why a proper clinical evaluation is important before starting any treatment.

When Should You Have Your Child’s Bite Evaluated?

During childhood, the teeth and jaws are still developing.
An orthodontic evaluation can help identify potential problems early, including:

  • Open bite.

  • Crossbite.

  • Dental crowding.

  • Lack of space for permanent teeth.

  • Protruding teeth.

  • Differences in jaw growth.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have their first orthodontic evaluation by age seven.
This does not mean that every child needs braces at that age.
In many cases, the orthodontist simply monitors the child's growth and development until the appropriate time for treatment.

A Healthy Bite Is About More Than Having Straight Teeth

Orthodontic treatment is not just about achieving a straighter smile.

A proper relationship between the teeth and jaws may help:

  • Make oral hygiene easier.

  • Improve certain chewing functions.

  • Distribute biting forces more evenly.

  • Reduce areas of excessive dental stress.

  • Improve tooth alignment.
